                  first timers to the snow

                  Picture
I have been skiing in Thredbo since I was a child and have also experienced the
highs and lows of watching my three children learn to ski or snowboard!  It really is a fabulous family holiday!

We are located near the golf course and a free shuttle bus will take you  direct to Friday Flat.
Our location is convenient also for after hours as it  is only a short stroll to the village, for shopping and dining.  (Other  properties located near Friday Flat will require a longer walk into the village at night for provisions or a meal - not great when you are exhausted after a big day on the slopes).

Here are a few tips to make your first time a little less overwhelming, I hope!

Low season is less crowded and warmer, however the snow conditions are less reliable.  The resort makes snow at Friday Flat as much as they can, when they can.

Bring as many provisions as you can including lots of museli bars, chocolate snacks.  I also recommend small drink bottles with powdered powerade.  You can stop in either Cooma or Jindabyne for a supermarket shop plus there is a supermarket in the village for necessities.
I also bring ready prepared frozen homemade meals.  The chalet is fully self contained with microwave, washing machine and dryer.  A
big breakfast is the best start to a skiing day and helps keep the costs down.

On arrival in Thredbo I suggest you stop en route to either Valley Terminal or Friday Flat whilst you still have your car to buy/hire all the necessities.  Lesson, lift packages for First Timers are available as well as gear - skis, boards, boots even clothes and helmets.  I strongly suggest you hire in Thredbo in case anything goes wrong - children and ski boots dont always fit first time.  Plus skis can sometimes be lost/misplaced.  Dont forget some ski socks - one layer only.  You can also hire lockers there.

You can then load all the gear into your car and drive up the hill to the unloading area near the entance to chill-out @ thredbo.  There are several trolleys for your use to take everything almost to your front door, via a ramp/few steps at the end.

The car park area closest, is on a first come first served basis down the hill.  If it is full you can use any other free parking areas around the  village and  the designated driver can catch the free shuttle bus  back, whilst everyone else settles in.

Next morning you will need to catch the shuttle bus to Friday Flat.  This is the beginners area plus meeting point for all lessons which start each day at 9:30am 11:30am and 2pm.   You simply turn up, no need to book as the lesson is included in your first timer lift pass.  The earlier lessons are usually best as you may all be too tired by 2pm!  Plus the snow will be more hard packed after a morning of  excited skiiers/boarders!

After  a few days the instructor may promote you to Merritts via the Gunbarrell  chairlift. This is a bigger area with more runs and challenges.

At Merritts its another world, away from the busy day trippers and tourist buses.  Less crowded  with a cafe and deck to soak up the fabulous views and refreshing mountain air.

I totally understand how overwhelming it may seem for your first time, but once you get the hang of it you may be hooked for life!  Start saving now!

If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to call!
